World Cup–engineered rotor protection for downhill racing
Purpose-designed for modern downhill forks, this rotor guard was developed and race-tested with the Santa Cruz Syndicate at Downhill World Cup level, validated in the cold, wet, and high-contamination conditions typical of the sport.
It was originally created to solve a recurring race problem: mud, grit, and water rapidly contaminating the braking system during runs.
The result is a functional component designed to protect the rotor and brake assembly, stabilise operating temperatures, and reduce contamination reaching the rotor, pads and calliper.
This is not a cosmetic accessory.
Independently featured and tested by GMBN, BikeRadar and VoxelMatters.
Engineering approach
Each guard is fork-specific and modelled directly from precision 3D scans of the actual fork casting. No generic sizing. Proper alignment, verified calliper clearance, and full wheel-change access.
Guards are produced in small batches using engineering-grade carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer under controlled drying and temperature conditions. This manufacturing process provides improved strength, dimensional accuracy, and long-term stability compared with conventional prints.
Over 12 hours of production goes into every unit. Printed, finished, and inspected by hand.
Race Tech: Brake Temperature & Contamination
Disc brakes perform best within a relatively narrow temperature range. When conditions are wet and muddy, cold water and contamination can rapidly cool the rotor and introduce debris between the rotor, pads, and pistons. This often leads to inconsistent bite, reduced braking power, and increased pad wear.
The rotor guard works by limiting the direct exposure of the braking system to spray, mud, and debris while partially enclosing the caliper area. This helps retain some heat within the system and reduces the amount of contamination reaching the braking surfaces.
The goal is not to increase braking power, but to maintain more consistent brake behaviour in adverse conditions.
Performance
- Helps maintain braking consistency in rain, mud, grit, and freezing temperatures
- Integrated calliper coverage retains heat while shielding pads and pistons from contamination
- Dual-sided upper rotor coverage reduces debris ingress while stabilising rotor temperature
- Front wheel removal without disturbing the guard
- Fork-specific fit derived from direct 3D scanning
- Carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer construction for strength and dimensional control
- Small-batch manufacturing with manual finishing and inspection
Typical weight ~160 g
Why it exists
Downhill racing regularly happens in extreme conditions where mud and water can quickly contaminate the braking system.
This guard was developed to reduce that.
Refined through World Cup competition, it helps maintain more consistent braking behaviour in wet, cold, and high-contamination environments.
It’s an engineering solution to a real problem, not a cosmetic add-on.
